Bas reliefs featuring school subjects adorn this mid-century modern secondary school in the Pan Am District. Slated for demolition(big surprise), it makes me wonder why our city is in such a hurry to erase its past. Public buildings are built with taxpayer’s hard earned dollars, shouldn’t the taxpayer have a say in what happens to our built heritage. The tired argument that the building is old and rundown doesn’t fly anymore, couldn’t the cost of stewardship be factored into operating budgets? Wouldn’t it be fiscally responsible to maintain heritage buildings rather than letting them rot.
