Parkview…..coulda, woulda, shoulda!

Bas reliefs featuring school subjects adorn this mid-century modern secondary school in the Pan Am District. Slated for demolition(big surprise), it makes me wonder why our city is in such a hurry to erase its past. Public buildings are built with taxpayer’s hard earned dollars, shouldn’t the taxpayer have a say in what happens to our built heritage. The tired argument that the building is old and rundown doesn’t fly anymore, couldn’t the cost of stewardship be factored into operating budgets? Wouldn’t it be fiscally responsible to maintain heritage buildings rather than letting them rot. With another civic election looming on the horizon, find out where your candidate stands on this issue…and vote accordingly.

Mid Mod Moment

At the foot of  an Orwellian industrial zone, stands this testament to a more optimistic and prosperous time.

This mid century modern ruin, more 1954 than 1984, subtly borrows elements of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater house of  1936.  How clever was the architect to meld organic design elements to a commercial building.

How sad is it to see this charming edifice abandoned and ignored by the traffic that travels around and almost over it.

My Beautiful Laundrette

Wow this must be the most fabulous laundromat in town!

This amazing space has a midcentury modern vibe with turquoise walls and retro inspired lighting. Even the neon sign is aqua. Wash day has never been so glamourous!

Inside the decor is accented with black and white photographs, industrial style folding tables and a chic little chill lounge, perhaps they should of called it “The Glamourama”!

This surely is the brightest light on the Parkdale strip!
