Developed in the first 30 years of the turn of the 20th century, this enclave of stately homes on graceful boulevards captures the essence of the city beautiful movement that swept across North America and Europe at this time. Extending streetcar lines to these “Street Car Suburbs” allowed its residents to escape the city centre for a more peaceful way of life.
It is best explored on foot or by bike, in order to appreciate all the nuances and charms of this historic district.

Unfortunately the tranquility of this gracious neighbourhood has been marred with the implementation of one way street systems that bisect the area. Our city fathers in the 1950’s changed the main streets in the lower city one way, which in turn lowered real estate values and created a shift in what was once a desirable place to live in. Imagine having two, five lane highways under your nose. This bit of retro urban planning ruined some of the walkability and a much of the retail here. Although Dunsmure Village is on the upswing only the reversal of the one way street system will truly restore this enclave to its former glory.
